MATERIALS, OBJECTS, AND EVERYDAY STRUCTURES

CURRICULUM EXPECTATIONS
www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum/elementary/scientec18currb.pdf
OVERALL EXPECTATIONS
1. assess the impact on people and the environment of objects and structures and the materials used in them
2. investigate structures that are built for a specific purpose to see how their design and materials suit the purpose
3. demonstrate an understanding that objects and structures have observable characteristics and are made from materials with specific properties that determine how they are used.

VIRTUAL LEARNING COMMONS
vlcguides.wcdsb.ca/Gr1Science/Structures

We are surrounded by a wide variety of common objects and structures that have distinctive shapes, patterns, and purposes.

In this unit, students will make the distinction between objects and materials through investigation of the observable characteristics of objects and the specific properties of the materials from which the objects are made.

Students will learn that a structure is not only an object in itself but also the
supporting framework that holds an object together.

They will also investigate how the materials and structure of an object determine its purpose.

ATOMS are the smallest building blocks of matter! A MOLECULE is a group of atoms bonded together!

Natural Materials are sourced directly from nature. For example, cotton is picked from cotton plants
Man Made Materials go through a rigorous processing to alter the material so that it suits its intended purpose

PLASTICS

GOLD
What makes gold so valuable:
Rare...deposited by meteorites and formed over millions of years
Rare but not to the point where it is nearly impossible to share and to use
Shiny/pretty
It doesn't explode or vanish or corrode (rust)
Fairly easy to carry
Fairly easy to shape
Fantastic conductor of electricity
