MOVEMENT
CURRICULUM EXPECTATIONS
OVERALL EXPECTATIONS
1. assess the impact on society and the environment of simple machines and mechanisms
2. investigate mechanisms that include simple machines and enable movement
3. demonstrate an understanding of movement and ways in which simple machines help to move objects.

MOVEMENT is the change in position of a person or object
A FORCE can change the direction that an object is going.
A PUSH is a force that moves an object away from something
A PULL is a force that brings an object closer
POTENTIAL ENERGY is the energy "stored" in an object
KINETIC ENERGY is energy at work
TYPES OF FORCE: gravity, friction, upthrust/buoyancy, air resistance, turning, shearing, magnetic, spring etc.

SIMPLE MACHINES make work easier. WORK is completed when a force is applied and energy is applied. Simple machines either change the direction of force and/or the amount of force needed using a mechanical advantage!
An INCLINED PLANE is also known as a ramp. It makes work easier because you could push a heavy object up a ramp instead of picking it up
|
A LEVER is a bar on top of a fixed point. The fixed point is called the fulcrum.
|
A WEDGE is a pair of inclined planes placed back to back. It is used to force something apart.
|
A WHEEL AND AXLE is a wheel with a rod attached to its centre. The rod is called an axle. When the axle is turned, the wheel turns.
|
A SCREW is a cylinder with an inclined plane wrapped around it. A screw can be twisted into an object to connect it to another object
|
A PULLEY is a wheel with a groove in it and a rope in the groove. The groove helps to keep the rope in place.
